Confirm the profile and application
State EPA 18% and DHA 12% with units, test method, assay basis and an acceptance range. Specify the finished use—softgel, liquid supplement or another format—and the amount of EPA and DHA required per serving. That helps the formulator assess fill mass and serving design.
Decide whether form is fixed
An 18/12 profile can be considered in different molecular forms depending on the supplier’s actual catalogue. If the formula or label requires TG, say so. If the form is open, ask for separate options and compare them in the intended product. Never infer form from “18/12” alone.
Review the quality package
Request a controlled specification and a representative, lot-specific COA. Confirm product and batch identity, EPA/DHA results, PV, p-anisidine value, TOTOX and test methods. Set contaminant, microbiological and sensory requirements for the product category and destination market.
Clarify which tests are performed for every lot and which are periodic. Verify certificate scope and document availability for the actual site and product. For repeat supply, align the approved sample, specification revision, COA and purchase order.
Confirm packing and storage
Ask for container size, headspace protection, closure, storage guidance, transport conditions, shelf-life basis and expected lead time. Confirm whether pack size fits your usage rate and receiving setup. If a container will be opened over multiple production runs, create an approved handling and re-test procedure.
18/12 fish oil sourcing checklist
- EPA 18% / DHA 12% target, assay basis and limits.
- Molecular form confirmed in the product specification.
- Batch COA and test methods align with the agreed requirements.
- Contaminant, sensory and microbiology criteria fit the market.
- Packaging, storage, shipment and opened-container procedures are known.
- Sample and commercial-lot acceptance criteria are linked.
Evaluate cost in the finished formula
Calculate the ingredient mass required to deliver the serving target and compare cost per finished dose. Include package size, freight, testing, documents and expected yield. A standard profile may suit some product formats, while a different concentration may fit others; the formula trial determines the practical trade-off.
