50/20 Fish Oil Sourcing Guide: EPA, DHA and Form

A 50/20 target describes the EPA and DHA profile, but it does not settle the ingredient form, assay basis or application fit. Use this checklist to compare offers on the same specification.

Key takeaways

  • State that 50/20 means EPA 50% and DHA 20%, and confirm the assay basis and acceptance limits.
  • Compare EE, TG and rTG as separate options rather than assuming the ratio specifies the form.
  • Check oxidation, sensory, contaminant, packaging and batch-document requirements.
  • Model the formula and compare delivered cost per usable EPA/DHA dose.

Define what 50/20 means in your specification

Write the target as EPA 50% and DHA 20%, then state the units, assay basis, analytical method and acceptance range. Confirm whether the remaining omega-3 fraction matters to the formula or label. A shorthand product name should not replace a controlled specification.

Select molecular form separately

Ask whether the required form is EE, TG or rTG, or whether alternatives may be evaluated. Request separate quotations and documents for each form. Do not compare a 50/20 offer with another profile or form and treat the quoted price per kilogram as a like-for-like comparison.

If the form is flexible, model each candidate in the finished dose. Review fill mass, capsule dimensions, serving count, sensory criteria and process compatibility with the formulation and manufacturing teams.

Review quality and batch evidence

Agree oxidation limits and methods for PV, p-anisidine value and TOTOX. Define contaminant and microbiology requirements for the intended product and destination market. Check whether reported results are specific to the offered batch and whether the COA uses the agreed product identity and specification revision.

For a sample, record the lot or sample code, storage condition and intended application. Approval should include the criteria for the commercial batch, not only the development sample.

Compare delivered cost, not only price per kilogram

Build a cost comparison using the amount of ingredient needed to deliver the target EPA and DHA, plus pack size, freight, insurance, import charges, testing and expected production yield. Include any additional requirements for documents, packaging or handling. A more concentrated profile can change dose economics, but the actual comparison depends on the formula and supplier quote.

50/20 fish oil buyer checklist

  • EPA 50% / DHA 20% values, units, assay basis and limits are explicit.
  • Molecular form is specified per quote and supported by documents.
  • PV, p-anisidine value, TOTOX and other quality criteria are agreed.
  • The sample is tested in the intended dosage form.
  • Pack size, storage, shipment and destination-market files are confirmed.
  • Cost is compared per usable dose under the same commercial assumptions.

Information to include in the RFQ

Send the 50/20 target, molecular form, application, sample quantity, annual volume, quality limits, packaging preference, destination and documents required. Ask suppliers to identify assumptions and exclusions so the resulting offers can be compared accurately.

Frequently asked questions

Does 50/20 fish oil always mean EE form?

No. The ratio describes EPA and DHA targets; the molecular form must be specified separately and confirmed for the exact grade.

Is a 50/20 ingredient automatically right for a high-EPA softgel?

Not automatically. Check dose, fill mass, capsule format, the required DHA contribution, process behavior and market requirements in a formula trial.
